Lead DevOps Engineer

Started as the first DevOps hire. Turned a single-account ECS deployment into a segmented, multi-account EKS platform, and grew the team to three.

  • Managed five EKS clusters, with Karpenter scaling the non-production one from 150+ nodes on a workday to under 40 overnight and on weekends
  • Made every feature branch deploy to its own ephemeral environment automatically, 100 to 200 a week
  • Took Tailscale from an engineering-team tool to company-wide infrastructure for 80 people
  • Built and maintained internal tools, including a high-throughput proxy that kept 40 to 50 ephemeral environments live and hibernated idle ones
  • Worked under SOC 2 compliance

Full-stack Engineer, then Senior Platform Engineer

Started in the custom development group, where I architected and built several large features into a production PHP/Angular application and worked directly with customers. Moved to platform work and became team lead for the DevOps group.

  • Planned and led the migration from a legacy OpsWorks EC2 deployment to ECS, with Terraform covering the whole thing
  • Led the DevOps team from ECS to a 20+ node Kubernetes cluster in under a year, GitOps and CI/CD pipelines included
  • Owned the AWS budget and cut monthly spend by 20%
  • Kept the legacy PHP/MySQL application healthy for 100k+ registered users and several Fortune 500 customers
  • Helped get the next-generation Node.js microservice application into production on Kubernetes
  • Moved all metrics, logs and monitoring to Datadog
  • Worked under HIPAA compliance

Jul 2008 – Jan 2018

Owner

Ran my own consultancy on long- and short-term contracts covering design, development and deployment. The last one was a three-year project with an insurance firm, moving them off an aging AS/400 onto current tooling.

  • Introduced and deployed Kubernetes in an on-prem hosting environment, and architected the replacement for the AS/400
  • Built a pipeline on Jenkins and git branching that gave the team simultaneous test and review environments, and got finished code to production several times a day
  • Picked the architecture, framework and language for the greenfield production application
  • Pushed "instrument everything" across every application, using statsd, InfluxDB and Grafana

Senior developer on web applications, front end and back end both. Drove adoption of new tooling and development practices, and mentored the rest of the team.
